Rally Rank · player ratings

A rating that shows its working.

Rally Rank reads every point you score, not just who won. After each match you see what was expected, what happened and exactly why your rating moved.

One match, four steps

How a result becomes a rating.

  1. 1

    The score

You beat your opponent 11–7, 11–9.

Rally Rank counts every point, not just the result. Of the 38 points played, you won 22 and your opponent won 16.

  2. 2

    The expectation

Your opponent is rated higher, 1240 to your 1208.

From that gap, Rally Rank expected you to win about 16 of the 38 points and your opponent about 22.

  3. 3

    The surprise

You won 22 points, about 6 more than expected.

Beating the expectation pushes a rating up. Falling short pulls it down, so your opponent, who won about 6 fewer than expected, drops. Winning the match adds only a small extra.

  4. 4

    The move

You go up 50. Your opponent goes down 11.

You both saw the same 6-point surprise. Your rating is still new, so Rally Rank lets each result move it further. Your opponent’s is established, so it moves less.

Points, not just wins

Every point you win counts towards your rating.

Rally Rank compares the points you won with the points your rating predicted. That means the result alone doesn’t decide which way you move.

Example · a much stronger opponent

A close loss can lift you.

The result
Lost9–11, 10–12
Your rating
▲ Goes updespite the loss
Points you won19 of 42
expectedyou
More points than your rating expected

Your rating predicted a heavier defeat. Running them close shows you’re stronger than your rating says, so it rises even though you lost.

Example · a much weaker opponent

A narrow win can cost you.

The result
Won11–9, 12–10
Your rating
▼ Goes downdespite the win
Points you won23 of 42
expectedyou
Fewer points than your rating expected

Your rating predicted a comfortable win. Scraping through shows you’re not quite as strong as your rating says, so it can dip even though you won.

Rating status

Every rating tells you how sure it is.

Each rating carries one of three labels. It shows how much evidence is behind the number, not how long you’ve been playing.

Where everyone starts
New

Rally Rank is still learning your level.

Your rating moves more after each match while it finds where you belong. Doubles usually takes a little longer than singles.

Accuracy

Picks about 3 in 4 match winners before a ball is hit.

That puts it level with forecasts built on an established national rating, using nothing but the results you play.

For clubs and organisers

Divisions drawn on evidence, not hearsay.

Your results feed one rating that players can check for themselves, so seeding and grading are easier to explain.

  1. 01League and tournament matches count in full. Club sessions count a little less.
  2. 02Repeat matches are weighted down. After three meetings with the same opponents in a month, further repeats count half.
  3. 03Rankings show active, established players only. Nobody gets ranked on one lucky evening.
  4. 04A person reviews disputes. Disputed scores and mixed-up player identities go to an organiser to resolve.
